Bento Box Fun!

2/23/2016

Bento Boxes are a fun way to mix up lunches or even snacks in your day.  I have been struggling to get in my lunch during the day because I get busy and either forget, or don't want to go through the hassle of having to make something for just me when I am home during the day.

Things to include in a bento box, well of course all your favorite things!

In this weeks Bentos, I have included:

  -6 Blueberries
  -4 Grapes
-1 piece of Strawberry (the ones I bought were huge, so I cut them into 4 before adding a piece to each bento)
-1 small Mandarin, they are called Cuties :)
  -4 slices of Mushrooms
  -2 sticks of Zucchini
  -3 slices of Cucumber
  -4 snap Peas
  -3 Carrots
  -2 Celery sticks
  -2 pieces Broccoli
  - 1 piece Cauliflower
-1 hard boiled egg (not pictured)
-3 tbsp home made Hummus (see below)

You can really add just about anything to the bento boxes, if you are going to add dry things like bagel chips, or tortilla chips etc you want them to be sealed and away from the other ingredients, so either in a small container, or a small baggie.

This weeks combination of bento is approx. 260 calories, give or take depending on sizes of things.

I used these Take Along containers that I picked up at Walmart for $2 something for 3 containers, but any longer container will work.  I will eventually be ordering some divided containers, but for now these combined with a few silicone muffin cups will work!

The hummus came from another website, and I made it in my Bullet, a note for this, you don't need the largest container to make it in..lol..you can do it in probably the smallest from start to finish, and then you can also use it to store any remaining hummus you have that you don't portion out!

I used the Hummus Recipe from Inspiredtaste.net, including the home made Tahini, that you need for the hummus.

You can follow my Pinterest Bento Box Board if you like for inspiration for making your own Bento boxes.

Do you like to make Bento boxes?  I am always looking for inspiration for what to put in my bentos for the week, please leave me a comment and let me know what you put in your Bentos!!

Planner Goodness!

Why I use a planner in todays electronic world:

for a few reasons...

1. I love to be crafty!  You can't add fun stickers, or color, or stamp even in your electronic calendar.

2.  I remember more when I write things down rather then type them into my calendar

3.  Its fun also to belong to a group fo like minded people that are there to support you!  I don't see any Google Calendar support groups, or Google Calendar decorating groups...lol

4.  i need something tangible to see what my week looks like, or what my month looks like,  And easily be able to flip back and forth between the two.
Picture
I get more excited about things that I am able to draw into my planner, the first thing in 2016 that I will be doing other then eating a good breakfast is a 5K!  When I can draw, or stick a cute sticker on an important event to me that gets me excited about what I am doing.
Picture
I don't always plan in all of my planners, sometimes I make lists, I belong to Listers Gotta List online, and throughout the month we have prompts to not only help you discover yourself, but also help you keep memories alive of things that you may not have documented.  I find with todays electronic world there isnt enough memory keeping, other then photographs taken with peoples phones, what do you do with them?  This is a great way to capture those memories without having to dedicate a 12x12 page to it.

I am sure I will be sharing more pages here, as well as some videos as I create some too.

Happy Crafting!

Picture
Here is the start of my weekend at Olds Fiber week.  Setting up my Sewn By Lindsay booth was quite a work out!  But I got it done, and it looked amazing if I do say so myself!  This is the first show of many for Sewn By Lindsay!

Needle Something to HoldĀ

1/23/2015

I recently decided to try out my 9" US 1.5/2.5mm Chiaogoo sock needle when I was working on a travel sock.  I purchased this needle quite a while ago after hearing a friend really enjoyed working with them.  I cast on my sock with a 40" US 1.5/2.5mm needle which I have always done my socks on, (and yes, with 1 sock on the needle I know I could go down to a 32" cable to magic loop) and thought that because my 9" needle was the same size, that I would give it a try.

I had to knit about 2" on my sock still on the 40" cable since it needed about that much to be able to stretch enough on the 9" cable in order to knit in the round with it, rather then magic loop which I do with my 40" cable.  When I figured I had enough knit, I switched over to the 9".  Switching over was easy, just like any other needle switching you do in projects.  I added a stitch marker to mark the beginning of my round and then I started just knitting on the 9" cable.

Here is where the trouble starts.  Don't get me wrong they are not hard to use, and I am sure if I spent a little more time with them they would become easier to use.  But one of the reasons why I wanted to knit with the 9" cable was so I didn't have to do the "needle shuffle" so often, as you do when doing magic loop, every 28 stitches or so you are moving needles around to knit the next side.  But I found that even though it was for shorter lengths, it was more frequent then magic loop.

My hand also started to cramp up, at which point you know knitting starts to not be so fun.  This too of course with a little time could go away as your hands get used to knitting with such small needles with the metal of the needle on each end of the cable being only 2" each.  My hands aren't large by any means, but I do think they are larger then my friends hands who recommended the 9" length to me.

I was thinking about my knitting as I knit a few rows, I began to think, now with what is on the needle, and how much room there isn't in 9" of space, I thought well how am I supposed to try these on as I get closer to the heel?  There is no way to stretch the cable, and my foot at the ball is 9" so there is a great possibility that while I am trying to maneuver my foot in to try it on, I would lose stitches.  It seems like a waste to me to knit maybe 6-7" with this 9" cable and then have to switch back to magic loop knitting just to be able to try on my sock.

So perhaps these needles still are worth getting for some people, if you don't mind knitting on dpn's or magic loop to start your sock, and then switching, and if you either don't mind switching needles to try on your sock, or don't need to try it on, then you may like being able to knit your sock truly in the round on this super short cable.

For now I think I will stick to magic loop sock knitting.  And leave these needles in their re-sealable package for future use, or see if my friend wants another pair to enjoy.  I think overall I would give the 9" length of needle a 7/10.  It wasn't bad, but it wasn't for me.

Hope you enjoyed this very candid review,  I love Chiaogoo needles, so much that they are now available in my Etsy Shop.  I have 40" lengths to start, but I will be adding more sizes and lengths in the near future!!

Happy knitting!
